Fantagraphics Books is reprinting The Eternaut, by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano Lopez, which won the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection and has now been adapted into a Netflix series. The story, about a small group of people who survive an alien invasion of Buenos Aires, was originally serialized from 1957 to 1959 in Argentina and reflects the politics of the country during a time of military rule and Cold War paranoia. Oesterheld was a member of the leftist movement in Argentina who was “disappeared” in 1977, and the comic and its sequels (one of which Oesterheld wrote while in hiding) have become emblematic of resistance in Latin America. Fantagraphics originally published the graphic novel, a 12” x 9” hardcover, in 2015; the new edition will be available later in 2025.
The story was adapted into a board game in 2023 (see “Pendragon Game Studio Announces ‘The Eternaut’”).
